Richard Callander will once again lead his team of John O’Shea, Duncan McRae and Hugh Bowman along the streets of Sydney to raise much needed funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, Bravehearts and the Melanoma Foundation.
Sydney Children’s Hospital

Each year the Emergency department at the Sydney Children’s Hospital cares for 30,000 children, two thirds under six years of age. Many cases are common illness and injuries – bronchiolitis in young babies, febrile convulsions and gastroenteritis in toddlers, fractures and lacerations from falls and sports. About 20% are admitted to the Hospital with critical illness or injury requiring needing intensive care.

The Emergency Service also cares for children with chronic health problems who become acutely unwell – children on cancer treatment who develop infections, ex-premature babies who develop breathing problems, children with epilepsy who have prolonged convulsions.

The Emergency Service extends across the state to offer specialist support to doctors in smaller metropolitan and rural hospitals with the care of children with severe injuries from car accidents, children with meningitis or severe asthma.

The funds raised through the 4Tracks4Kids will fund more specialist staff to provide better care for children.

Bravehearts

Bravehearts Inc. operates under an Article of Association, is operated by a Board of Management and is assisted by a professional Advisory Committee. We are registered under the Collections Act 1966; ABN and GST registered (41 496 913 890), are a registered Charity and are registered with the ATO as a DGR (Deductible Gift Recipient). We have four offices in three states and employ more than 30 staff.

Bravehearts’ members comprise survivors, parents, friends, partners, professionals and non-abusive members of the community who share in the belief that child sexual assault must stop.

Bravehearts aims to ‘Break the Silence’, provide healing and support, engender child sexual assault prevention and protection strategies; advocate for understanding and promote increased education and research.

Melanoma Foundation

The Melanoma Foundation was established in 1984 as a charitable foundation of the University of Sydney. With the ultimate goal of finding a cure for melanoma, the foundation continues to foster a culture of research for both the clinical and non clinical members within the University of Sydney and support the training of the next generation of researchers and academics.

The Foundation helps the Hospital to purchase state of the art medical equipment and financially support life saving services, as well as undertake medical and child health research.

The Foundation has a vital and continuing role in preserving and enhancing the services and standard of health care provided by the Sydney Children’s Hospital for our sick children.

The Foundation is committed to the pursuit of world-class standards in the quality of our services, the efficiency of our fundraising, our transparency, integrity, cost-effectiveness, accessibility and the correctness and effectiveness of good governance and administration.

In an era of rising health care cost, the challenge for the Foundation is not only to maintain community support for the Hospital, but also to increase it.

Our Mission

To provide significant financial assistance for the support of equipment, research and clinical services at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

White Balloon Day was created in response to the revelation that a family member was a paedophile. A brave disclosure by a 7 year old led to the realisation that this much loved family elder had preyed on innocent children and their trusting parents for 40 years. Compounding this tragedy was the fact that this 40 year reign of terror had never been disclosed, let alone reported.

With the support of her family, Hetty decided that the time had come to change the culture of silence that has, for too long, aided and abetted the assault and torture of our most vulnerable members of society, our children. The search was on for a symbol to demonstrate this issue.

After much discussion, there seemed no better symbol to highlight the issue of child sexual assault than the humble ‘White Balloon’. The White Balloon was considered symbolic of the issue of child sexual assault following reflection on a public demonstration, which was held in Belgium on 20th October, 1996. On this day 300,000 people gathered with white balloons and white flowers in a show of public sympathy and support for the parents of the young girls who were either murdered or missing at the hands of a previously convicted and released paedophile Marc Dutroux.

White Balloon Day is now an annual national event run by Bravehearts. It is widely supported by commercial, government and community sectors alike. In addition, White Balloon Day enjoys overwhelming support and encouragement from the media, schools, churches, health practitioners, emergency services, the legal fraternity and community organisations.
